Otsiningo Rally

Great rally Saturday, September 15 at beautiful Otsiningo Park. Over 200 people gathered to share their views on the Governor’s proposal to allow “experimental” hydrofracturing in the five counties of the Southern Tier – Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Steuben, and Tioga.  Residents of these counties and politicians running on an anti-fracking platform spoke elegantly and from their hearts on this issue. Sandra Steingraber, author, ecologist, cancer-survivor and mother, spoke to the science. If you missed it, follow this link to see videos of each speech.

The Joint Landowners Coalition put out an all-call to show up and demonstrate against us. Ten gassers showed up. One was from Long Island. He looked lost. Two were real estate agents from Pennsylvania or New Jersey who are speculating in shale gas plays and who think we need gas drilling because “our country is poor.” (or is it because they want to be rich?) Here is a link to the Fox news report.

If you care about  future generations and haven’t read Sandra Steingraber’s book Raising Elijah: Protecting Children in a Time of Environmental Crisis, you should. This is a elegantly written book in the style of Carson’s Silent Spring, in which a mother who is also a scientist, searches for ways to protect her own children, who are everyone’s children, in an increasingly toxic world.
